MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian intelligence services are investigating whether Western agencies played a role in the failed mutiny led by Wagner militia leader Yevgeny Prigozhin on Saturday, the Tass news agency reported citing remarks on Monday from Russian Foreign Minister.
In an interview with Russian television channel RT, Sergei Lavrov said US Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy spoke to Russian officials on Sunday and gave “signals” that the US United were not involved in the mutiny, according to Tass.
According to Sergei Lavrov’s reported remarks, the minister also indicated that Lynne Tracy had judged the mutiny to be an internal Russian matter.
Several Western country leaders said Wagner’s rebellion showed growing instability in Russia after President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine last year.
Asked whether there was evidence of involvement of Ukrainian or Western intelligence services, Sergei Lavrov replied: “I work in a service that does not collect evidence on illegal actions but we have such structures and I you guarantee that they are already considering this.”
