TOKYO (Reuters) – Nissan Motor has decided not to fill the post of deputy chief executive following the departure of Ashwani Gupta as the group puts in place a new management structure, the Japanese automaker said on Wednesday.

The responsibilities previously assumed by Ashwani Gupta will be taken over by other executives, he said.

Hideyuki Sakamoto, executive vice president in charge of supply chain, will be responsible for purchasing. Stephen Ma, Chief Financial Officer, will take charge of operations performance.

“In response to ever-changing market conditions, we will introduce a flatter and more agile management structure, which will strengthen regional and functional leadership,” Nissan Chief Executive Officer Makoto Uchida said in a statement.

Nissan announced earlier this month that Ashwani Gupta would leave the automaker to pursue other opportunities, after saying he would no longer serve on the board when his term expired on Tuesday.

Reuters reported this month that Nissan was investigating accusations that chief executive Makoto Uchida had Ashwani Gupta monitored.

Nissan is in the process of finalizing the agreement on the terms of the restructuring of the alliance with its partner Renault.

Ashwani Gupta had opposed Makoto Uchida on the latter’s desire to quickly conclude negotiations with the French group, the former director of operations having asked for more caution on the terms of the agreement.
