ROME (Reuters) – The Italian government said on Tuesday it expects Stellantis, parent company of Fiat, to at least double the number of vehicles it produces in the country.

An annual target of one million vehicles was agreed at a meeting in Rome between Italian Industry Minister Adolfo Urso and Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. No specific timetable has been disclosed.

Speaking to SkyTG24 television channel, Adolfo Urso regretted that production of Stellantis vehicles in Italy fell last year to around 450,000 units, despite government incentives.

During the talk a target of one million vehicles was set, he said. “Tavares said he could do it, and go from 450,000 vehicles to one million.”

A spokesman for Stellantis said the automotive group “hoped” the right conditions would be created to reverse the curve on local production.

Echoing a previous press release, published on Monday, he added that Stellantis intended to follow a “road map” which could eventually make it possible to produce in Italy one million “vehicles” – a denomination traditionally grouping together cars and vans.

According to data from the automobile federation, Stellantis produced around 685,750 vehicles in Italy last year – nearly 480,000 cars and 206,000 vans.
