(News Bulletin 247) – The rise in retail sales in Great Britain accelerated sharply in June, thanks in particular to the success of the summer sales campaign, the ONS, the national statistics institute, announced on Friday.

On a month, retail sales in volume rose 0.7% last month, a figure well above the consensus which aimed for 0.2%, after having signed an increase of 0.1% in May.

The ONS refers to an almost general increase that has affected all sectors of the economy (food, non-food and e-commerce), with the exception of gasoline sales.

Sales of household goods thus increased by 1.4% under the effect of summer sales in the furniture sector, but the ONS also highlights the good health of the second-hand sales sector in a context of galloping inflation.

By measuring retail sales over a sliding three-month period, which smooths out some of the volatility of the statistics, the increase reached 0.4% compared to the three months ended at the end of March.

Still expressed in volumes, retail sales in the United Kingdom are still 0.2% lower than those of February 2020 preceding the appearance of the coronavirus epidemic, specifies the ONS in its press release.
