(News Bulletin 247) – Ford announces that a supplier informed it that a security researcher had discovered a vulnerability in the SYNC 3 infotainment system available on certain Ford and Lincoln vehicles.
‘Immediately, and in collaboration with them, we began to develop and validate measures to remedy the vulnerability’, indicates the manufacturer.
To date, Ford has found no evidence that this vulnerability has been exploited. ‘Our investigation also revealed that if this vulnerability were exploited, however unlikely, it would not affect the safety of vehicle occupants, since the infotainment system is firewalled from controls such as steering , acceleration and braking,” he adds.
Ford intends to release a software patch online soon to be downloaded and installed via USB. In the meantime, customers concerned about the vulnerability can simply disable Wi-Fi functionality through the SYNC 3 infotainment system’s Settings menu, the manufacturer warns.
