LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 0.2% in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics released on Friday.
Economists polled by Reuters expected the same figure, unchanged from the initial estimate published on August 11.
According to the ONS, UK GDP grew by 1.8% over the period compared to the last quarter of 2019, the last before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a first estimate on August 11, the ONS estimated GDP in the second quarter of 2023 down by 0.2% compared to the last quarter of 2019.
This upward revision was, however, widely expected, the statistical institute having estimated on September 1, based on new data, that growth in the last quarter of 2021 was 0.6% higher than that of the last three months of 2019. .
With this revision, the resumption of activity in Great Britain after the COVID-19 pandemic rises to the level of those of France and Italy.
Britain’s relative economic performance since the pandemic and its departure from the European Union is under scrutiny in the run-up to next year’s parliamentary elections.
