Martin Scorsese disagrees with the label “indie film” (independent films). The director speaking to IndieWire he said that such films should be screened in theaters just like blockbusters. However, labeling a film as “indie” makes it easier for movie theater chains to avoid including such films in their programming, he noted.

The point is that it would be great to see on the big screen not only blockbusters and franchises, but also what is now considered “indie” cinema. I don’t like that characterization,” Scorsese said. “I think they’re movies for everyone, and I’d like to see some support from cinemas that would allow people to want to go to a theater to see a movie that’s not necessarily a blockbuster.».

The director added that studios are “no longer interested in supporting individual productions that express the personal feelings or personal thoughts and ideas of artists. And what happened is that they call them “indie”.

Scorsese spoke about the fragmented film culture in theaters, telling Time magazine: “The film culture should be one. But right now everything is fragmented and falling apart in a way… Not everyone likes musicals. Not everyone likes westerns. Not everyone likes gangster movies or noirs. But at the time, we just went to the movies.”
