PARIS/BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Air France and KLM, subsidiaries of the Dutch group Air France-KLM, and Brussels Airlines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, announced on Thursday that they were among the twenty or so airlines targeted since Tuesday by action by European authorities which suspect them of greenwashing.

Confirming information first reported by Belgian radio and television RTBF, an Air France spokesperson told Reuters that it had received a letter from the European Commission regarding an investigation into allegations of greenwashing.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the European Commission indicated that “EU consumer protection authorities (Consumer Protection Cooperation Network – CPC authorities) have sent letters to 20 airlines.”

“They identify several types of potentially misleading green claims and call on them to bring their practices into compliance with EU consumer protection law within 30 days.”

“If the airlines concerned do not take the necessary measures to resolve the issues raised in the letter, the CPC network authorities may decide to take further enforcement measures, including sanctions,” the Commission said.
