LONDON (Reuters) – EDF announced on Wednesday the extension of the operation of four nuclear power plants in Great Britain and its intention to invest 1.3 billion pounds sterling (1.5 billion euros) in its British fleet between 2025 and 2027.
The United Kingdom, which is aiming for carbon neutrality in 2050, is emphasizing the development of nuclear power and the replacement of its old power plants.
“We will not be able to achieve clean energy by 2030 without nuclear power, which provides a steady and essential supply of clean, locally produced energy,” Energy Security Minister Ed Miliband said in a press release. EDF.
The company said it would seek to extend the operation of the Heysham 2 and Torness power stations for a further two years, until March 2030.
The operation of the Hartlepool and Heysham 1 power stations will be extended by one year, until March 2027.
EDF has previously said it wants to extend the operating life of the Sizewell B power plant by 20 years, but no decision on this issue is expected immediately, with the closure of the site planned for 2035.
In total, the company said £1.3 billion would be invested in the five plants over the next three years.
