(News Bulletin 247) – The American Stock Exchange will be closed on January 9, a day of national mourning in honor of the 39th President of the United States who died on Sunday at the age of 100.
US stock markets will close on January 9 in tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Sunday at the age of 100 in his hometown, Georgia, in the southeastern United States.
January 9 was declared a national day of mourning in honor of the 39th president by the White House.
“President Carter was an exemplary leader, who tirelessly continued his efforts to improve the human condition, even after his term ended. His actions will be felt around the world for years to come. On behalf of Nasdaq, we present our most “Sincere condolences to the Carter family,” Nasdaq Chairman Tal Cohen said in a statement.
“Jimmy Carter (…) dedicated his life to public service and the defense of our freedom,” commented the president of the NYSE, Lynn Martin, in a press release. “During his remarkable post-presidential life, President Carter left a lasting legacy of humanitarianism,” she added.
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq also observed a minute of silence on Monday at 9:20 a.m. local time. The flag flying above the New York Stock Exchange will be lowered to half-mast.
