A series of deadly tornadoes spawned tornadoes in the southern and southeastern US over the weekend, killing at least four people and destroying homes and schools. The storms and tornadoes caused holiday travel delays and cancellations at some airports.

In Mississippi, two people were killed and at least six injured as tornadoes ripped through the state, Gov. Tate Reeves (R) announced Sunday, adding that at least 100,000 people lost power during the storm. The dead were located in Lowndes and Adams counties, he said, while injuries were reported in Franklin, Simpson and Wayne counties.

In Texas, one person was killed and four others suffered non-life-threatening injuries after a tornado touched down in the Liverpool and Hillcrest Village areas, the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday. Both areas are less than 72 km south of Houston.

The victim, a 48-year-old woman, was in her home when the tornado struck and was later found thrown about 100 feet from her residence, local media reported. Video broadcast by news networks showed broken windows and a partially torn roof in at least one home, as well as a damaged playground at an elementary school, the grounds of which were littered with rubble.

Video released by the shows school computers and furniture spilling from the side of Walt Disney Elementary School in Alvin Township, where a tornado knocked down walls. It also partially collapsed the roof of the building.

Damage was also reported in other parts of Texas, including East Montgomery County, north of Houston.

In North Carolina, a 70-year-old Iredell County man also died when a tree fell on his truck while he was driving in heavy rain, NBC affiliate WXII 12 reported, citing the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
