Berlin (Reuters) – Bayer was sentenced by a jury of the American State of Georgia to pay around 2.1 billion dollars (1.94 billion euros) to a complainant who accuses the Roundup, a herbicide, of having caused his cancer, said the lawyers of the complaint on Friday evening.

This conviction includes $ 65 million in compensatory damages and $ 2 billion in punitive damages, law firms Arnold & Itkin LLP and Kline & Specter PC said in an email sent to Reuters.

The German pharmaceutical and agrochemical giant announced on Saturday that it would appeal.

The group has already settled $ 10 billion so that nearly 100,000 Americans, with cancer which it attributes to an exposure to glyphosate herbicide, marketed by the Monsanto company bought in 2018 by Bayer, abandon their prosecutions against it.

More than 60,000 other cases are still underway and the group has set aside $ 5.9 billion in provisions.

In a press release, Bayer expressed his disagreement with this judgment. “We believe that we have solid arguments to have this verdict appeal on appeal and eliminate or reduce excessive and unconstitutional damages,” added the group.

Earlier in March, Bayer’s management told American parliamentarians that she could cease the sale of Roundup unless they strengthen legal protection against disputes of this kind, a financial analyst and a person close to the file told Reuters.
