(Reuters) – Tesla new car sales fell 62% in the United Kingdom and 46% in Germany in April, at their lowest level for more than two years, even though the demand for electric vehicles (VE) has increased in both countries, according to national data published on Tuesday.
Sales have also reached hollows of several years in other key markets in Europe last month, while Tesla is about to retaliate to competition from European and Chinese brands with the launch of a model reworked there.
In Germany, the brand’s sales fell to 885 units in April, marking a fourth month of decline this year and a cumulative drop of more than 60% since the start of the year, according to the Federal Traffic Agency (KBA).
So far, the United Kingdom has been an exceptional in Europe for Tesla this year, but in April, only 512 new cars have been sold there, against 1,352 a year earlier, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Since the start of the year, Tesla has therefore had a market share of 9.3% for electric vehicles in the United Kingdom, according to data from the New Automotive Research Group.
This figure is down compared to the 12.5% of the previous year, according to data from the research group.
Tesla’s websites in Germany and Great Britain indicate that deliveries of the Model Y reworked will start in June, but it will take a few months before the sales data show if the updated version has returned to customers.
The proximity of Elon Musk with American president Donald Trump and his policy aroused protests against him and the company.
While sales and benefit of the brand in the first quarter have missed expectations, Elon Musk said two weeks ago that he would reduce the time he spent on the Trump administration and that he would spend more time led the business.
The overall car sales in Germany fell 0.2% in April, but those of electric vehicles increased by 53.5%, said KBA.
In Great Britain, registrations for electric battery cars increased by 8.1% during the month, while total car sales fell by 10.4%, according to SMMT data.
