(BFM Stock Exchange) – The flagship index of the Paris Stock Exchange resumed 1.2% on Monday, May 26, thanks to this sign of relaxation of trade tensions between Washington and Brussels. The session took place in moderate volumes, Wall Street and London having been closed.

The CAC 40 recovered a little on the place this Monday, May 26. The Paris Stock Exchange Barometer returned to 1.2% to 7,828.13 points. Not enough to erase the withdrawal of 1.65% on Friday, of course. But the index begins better the week he had finished the previous one.

The Parisian index welcomed the postponement of American customs surcharières to the European Union on July 9.

These surcharges were initially offset until June 1, at first. Last week, Donald Trump threatened to apply these additional customs duties of 50% from Sunday, June 1, then evoking “very difficult” commercial negotiations with the European Union.

Stellantis sharp rise

Ultimately, on the night of Sunday to Monday, the American president announced to prolong this stay of just over a month, following a “very good conversation” with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

“With the announcement yesterday (Sunday, editor’s note) of Donald Trump that he would leave more time for negotiations, with an increase in prices now scheduled for July 9, he again shows that he is retiring before the negative impact on the markets of his decisions,” observes Sebastian Paris Horvitz de LBPAM.

“It is difficult at this stage to determine with certainty where this confrontation will end. However, the most likely is that these 50% rates will not be applied. Donald Trump should go back. At the same time, it is possible that the rates can be established higher than the current 10%,” he continues.

Note that the volumes exchanged were moderate during this session. This can be explained by the absence of several investors while Wall Street and the London Stock Exchange were closed this Monday due to a public holiday.

On the values side, the vast majority of the CAC 40 ended in the green. The best performances were signed by cyclical titles such as Stellantis (+4.8%) and ArcelorMittal (+4%).

In the other markets, the euro takes 0.1% against the dollar at $ 1.138. Oil is sluggish. The July Brent of the Northern Brents contract gives up 0.1% to $ 64.12 a barrel while the same maturity on the WTI listed in New York is also declining 0.1% to 61.48 Dollars per barrel.
