The blast caused extensive damagemainly in the basement but also in the rest of the store and miraculously there were no more victims, as it was rush hour and Julianou was busy.
The cause of the explosion is being investigated, however the most probable cause is considered to be caused by a gas cylinder. Firefighters who arrived at the scene said it smelled strongly of LPG, but did not find fire and took out four large bottles from the basement which had not exploded.
As a precaution, crews of EYDAP, PPC, and DEPA were notified and went to the scene of the explosion to check if there was a gas leak, but no such thing was found. At the same time, the traffic on Ioulianou Street was stopped, which is still closed.
It will be done in the store autopsy by experts to ascertain the causes, while the preliminary investigation has been undertaken by the Omonia Security Department.
