France: Chief of General Staff informed about the progress of the construction of the first Greek frigate Belharra

At the table are issues of mutual interest with emphasis on the current security challenges facing Greece and France, regional and international developments after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as the new conditions that are emerging in the international environment.

The Chief of General Staff, Rear Admiral Stylianos Petrakis, paid a four-day official visit to France at the invitation of Admiral Pierre Vandier’s counterpart, where, among other things, he had the opportunity to be informed about the progress of work on the Greek frigate. FDI HN (Belharra).

Issues of mutual interest were discussed, with emphasis on the current security challenges facing the two countries, regional and international developments after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as the new conditions that are emerging in the international environment.

The talks between the Chiefs of General Staff of the two countries also focused on the high level of cooperation between the two Navies and the possibilities of further strengthening the long-term ties, enhancing their operational capabilities and interoperability, given the future use of joint systems between the two Navies. In this context, special mention was made of the participation of Navy units in the operation “CLEMENCEAU 21” and “CLEMENCEAU 22”, in the international exercise of the French Armed Forces “POLARIS 21” but also the abundance of training in the eastern and central Mediterranean. Aegean.


During his visit, the Chief of General Staff visited:

– The facilities of THALES Group where he was informed about the development of the production of the Greek FDI systems as well as about the development and evolution of innovative systems and applications.

– The facilities of the company MBDA where he was informed about the development of the production of the guided missiles (K / B) that are going to equip the Greek FDI as well as on programs of the existing missile potential of the Navy.

– The facilities of the Naval Group in Lorient where he met with the Executive Vice President Alain Guillou and was informed about the plans for the design and development of new units for the French and Greek Navy and was given a tour of the shipyard where he had the opportunity to see the progress of shipbuilding of the first Greek frigate.

Furthermore, the Chief of General Staff visited:

– The Center for Maritime Information, Cooperation and Awareness (MICA Center) where he was informed about the staffing and capabilities of the Center, whose purpose is the identification and analysis of maritime events worldwide and the information and support of maritime and maritime organizations.

– The air base of Lann Bihoue where he was informed about the activities of the unit, while he attended a demonstration of an ATLANTIQUE-II type of naval operations aircraft.
