Halkidiki: The “orphan kilometer” in Potidea is in traffic

In its basic features, the project includes widening, improving and strengthening of the Provincial Road Moudania – Kallithea 1.2 km long and construction of a side road network with arrangements for access to many properties and service facilities, in fact the work required to be completed was 5.1 km long, “relieving” the main road from the additional traffic load.

The project now ensures upgraded road safety conditions for drivers, but also safe access to all properties and vertical roads to the sea.

This completely overturns the previous situation where crossings were carried out, in violation of any road safety rule, directly from the main road into gaps between the parapets, without sufficient width for the safe entry and exit of vehicles.

Record

The road section of the vertical axis of the Egnatia Odos Thessaloniki – Nea Moudania – Potidea had a cross section of 9 meters since 2011, while the rest of the network before and after had a cross section of 14 meters.

After his intervention Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Costas Karamanlis, The outstanding issues of the project “Vertical Axis of Egnatia Road Thessaloniki – Nea Moudania – Potidea: Improvement – widening of the section Nea Moudania – Potidea” concerning a section of 1.2 km were auctioned in its entirety and on July 14, 2020 the contract was signed.

In addition, three level roundabouts with radial connections were constructed to the local network and the artery as well as branches entering and leaving the artery and from it to the adjacent network by forming respective acceleration and deceleration lanes.

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. George Karagiannis stated: “Today we are winning the battle of the obvious and we are leaving behind yesterday for good. The last kilometer of the road of Potidea, which had been characterized as “orphan” and had become the joke of the city, is now handed over to traffic, upgrading road safety and putting an end to the suffering of thousands of visitors to Halkidiki.

I remind you that we had committed to deliver the work before the three days of the Holy Spirit and we are absolutely consistent in this commitment.
