Colombia: Navy Locates Two Large Shipwrecks – Impressive Images and Videos

The images, taken at a depth of 930 meters and located near the Barú Peninsula, show details of cannons, swords and gold coins.

The Colombian Navy – Armada Nacional – confirmed on Monday, June 6, that it has located two new large shipwrecks near the site of the San Jose shipwreck.

The wrecks were photographed by an underwater robot, equipped with a high-resolution camera.

The first images of the sunken ships were released by President Iván Duque during a press conference, accompanied by the Minister of Defense, Diego Molano, and the Commander of the Navy, Admiral Gabriel Pérez Garcés.

The images, taken at a depth of 930 meters and located near the Barú Peninsula, show details of cannons, swords and gold coins.

The legendary gallows “San Jose”, one of the largest ships of the Spanish Armada, sank on June 8, 1708, during a fierce naval battle. The ship with the 62 cannons and insignia of the Spanish crown was loaded with gold, silver, jewelry and other valuable cargo.

His 600-member crew was lost during the battle and his booty remained buried in the ocean until 2015.
After an exhaustive investigation involving the Colombian Navy and researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution of Massachusetts, the identity of the “Holy Grail Shipwreck” has been confirmed in 2018 and sparked an international debate between the Colombian and on the wreck.

Spain claimed that, as the ship sank with its royal flag and the area is a sacred burial ground for 600 souls, all the items recovered were rightfully hers, as evidenced by the royal map.

Colombia, however, has argued that the ship is in its own territorial waters and that this underwater treasure is wholly state-owned.

In May 2018, the two governments reached a compromise in their dispute over the ownership of “San Jose”.

More than 6,000 photographs reveal an extensive array of objects, scattered across many nautical miles of the ocean floor.

Presenting the latest underwater discoveries, the Colombian president pointed out that “our government has decided that all this treasure is a single heritage, it can not be divided. “With the use of high-tech equipment and computers, we have unlimited possibilities that will allow us to protect all this underwater heritage,” he added.
