From September, the extension of the opening hours of the all-day kindergartens and primary schools will come into force, said the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos, on SKAI radio.

As he clarified, initially the measure will cover 50% of all-day schoolsthat is, about 5,000 schools throughout the country, and the opening hours will be extended until 5:30 in the afternoon, with an extension to 6 in the future.

The minister spoke of an “important set of regulations”, stressing that the admission of students to the extended program of the all-day school will be free, ie without financial or other criteria for the student’s family.

Ms. Kerameos described the demographic bomb as a time bomb, pointing out that in the last 5 years the enrollment of students in the first grade has decreased by 16%.

He said that the government is taking measures at various levels to address the problem, such as measures to reduce the birth rate and to attract new people to our country who have gone abroad.
