Aegean Rally: “Fire” at the top of the general classification put the School of Naval Trials

“Fire” in its general classification 59th Aegean Rally put the boat “PEGA” of the School of Naval Trials. The experienced sailors and the fourth-year probationers of S.N.D. managed to take full advantage of the weather conditions and take the lead in yesterday’s race. In the general classification, “Pega” is equal in the first place with the “Velos” of Olympians Takis Mantis and Pavlos Kayalis. In third place in the overall standings is “Aeolia” by Spyros Papantoniou.

The sailboats started from the sea area of ​​Volissos (Chios) with strong north winds that reached, in places, six Beaufort. All the boats that chose to stay close to the mainland “stuck” because the wind was coming from the open Aegean. The “game” with the air continued on the 25 nautical miles of the route from Volissos to Venetiko. However, when the boats arrived at the islet, Aeolos “closed” his bag and the crews found it difficult to continue to complete the rotation of the islet.

The return from Venice found the boats sailing. Again, those sailboats that chose to stay near the shores of Chios were not favored in contrast to those that sought pelagic air. The average time it took the “purebred” races to cover the distance to the port of Volissos was seven hours.

“A big step has been taken but the fight still has a long way to go. In the Aegean Rally, the luck that was with us this time also counts. “The whole team worked according to the training we had done and our victory was judged on the smart tactics and the right choice of sails”, said the captain of the boat, Thodoris Tsoulfas.

This morning, the organizers have planned to lay a wreath at the Monument of the “Slaughter of Chios”, in Cape Melanio, as the race is dedicated to the Memory of the “Slaughter of Chios” (1822). The crews will then go on to historical and cultural landmarks of “Mastic Island”.

Co-organizers of the 59th Aegean Rally, which is held with the support of the Navy, are the North Aegean Region and the Municipality of Chios. Collaborating Clubs are the Nautical Club of Chios and the Nautical Sports Club of Lavreotiki. The race is sponsored for the sixth consecutive year by the multinational paint company JOTUN, while the sponsors are the companies, D. KORONAKIS SA one of the largest manufacturers of ropes and chains for shipping, the technical support company on seagoing ships TECHNAVA SA, Olympic Marine in Lavrio, the beer NISOS from Tinos and the natural mineral water ZAGORI. Communication sponsors are the TV station SKAI, the newspaper KATHIMERINI, the sports newspaper SPORTIME and the website of the Greek community HDNNY.
