Prosecutorial investigation into the flood in Thessaloniki

The offense that will be investigated is that of flood by negligence, an act that is prosecuted to the degree of misdemeanor.

The Prosecution of First Instance is investigating criminal responsibilities against anyone responsible for the problems created by yesterday’s storm in Thessaloniki, in the context of a preliminary examination.

On the occasion of publications in the print and electronic press, the head of the Prosecutor’s Office of Thessaloniki Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos instructed the prosecutor Athena Konstantinidou to order an investigation by the Investigative Department of the Fire Brigade.

The research will focus on any acts and omissions related to the maintenance of wells and gutters, in order to avoid flooding.

From heavy rainfallaccompanied at intervals by hail and strong winds, flooded underground houses and shops, while roads were turned into rivers, creating a traffic jam and immobilizing dozens of vehicles in underpasses and main roads, with their drivers trapped for hours.

As it became known, the Fire Department received a total of 470 calls. The crews of the Service proceeded with 40 water pumps, mainly in areas of the center and western Thessaloniki, while they intervened in four cases for transporting people to safe places and for five cutting of trees.
