The six scientists who will be awarded were distinguished for their outstanding contribution to the development of knowledge in key scientific fields and for the promotion of the Greek spirit in the international scientific community.
In detail, the winners by scientific field
Department of Basic Sciences: Mathematics Department
The award is given jointly to:
Stefanos Aretakis, Associate Professor of Theoretical Mathematics at the University of Toronto, for his work in the field of Pure Mathematics and his influence in the area of Theory of Relativity. In a series of pioneering works, St. Aretakis proved mathematically the existence of a new instability of the so-called “extreme” Black Holes, which was called “Aretaki instability” and is now the subject of studies in Physics. Read more about Stefanos Aretakis here.
Themistocles Sapsis, Professor of Ocean Engineering and Science at MIT, Department of Mechanical Engineering | Institute for Data, Systems and Society Center for Computer Science and Engineering, for his work in Applied Mathematics and specifically in the study of quantitative uncertainty characteristics for nonlinear dynamical systems. His work allows for a deep understanding of natural phenomena, such as extreme phenomena in the oceans, which he approaches with a rigorous mathematical methodology. It is therefore extremely useful for the analysis and prediction of natural ocean phenomena and for the design and safety of various mechanical systems. Department of Life Sciences: Branch of Biomedical Sciences
The award is given jointly to:
Christos Kyratsou, Senior Vice President of Research at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc., for his contribution to the treatment of viral diseases such as Ebola and SARS-COV-2 with new potent therapies, including a cocktail of antibodies to treat the early stages of infection with SARS-COV-2. See more information about Christos Kyratsou here.
Thali Papagiannakopoulos, Associate Professor and Director of the Molecular Oncology and Tumor Immunology Training Program at New York University School of Medicine, for his research work in the field of cancer genome engineering and metabolism. His approach bridges the gap between cancer biology and immunology. Find more information about Thalis Papagiannakopoulos here.
Department of Applied Science / Technology: Sector of Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources, Environmental and Natural Resources Management, Low Carbon Emission Technologies, Efficient Use and Conservation of Energy
The prize is awarded to Antonios Papavassiliou, Assistant Professor at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, for his contribution to the rational use of energy resources and the high-scale penetration of renewable energy sources in electricity systems. More information about Antonios Papavassiliou here.
Department of Social Sciences: Branch of Economics, Political Science, Law
The prize is awarded to Myrto Kalouptsidis, Associate Professor of Economics at Harvard University, for her innovative research in applied microeconomics and her study at the intersection of Industrial Organization and International Trade. Read more about Myrto Kalouptsidi here.
