Majorkinis: Coronavirus hospitalizations increase by 41% in the last week

by

According to the professor of Epidemiology, the basic scenario predicts a rapid increase in diagnoses for 1-2 weeks and then a slow de-escalation that will last 1-2 months.

Increase of of coronavirus diagnoses by 48% and of 41% of patients observed in Greece last week, according to Professor of Epidemiology and member of the Committee of Experts of the Ministry of Health, Gika Majorkini, who emphasizes that the oscillation of O4 / O5 (variants) in Europe has begun.

As he notes, in a post on Facebook, Mr. Majorkinis “29 of the 45 European countries have seen an increase in diagnoses in the last week, of which 15 have seen an increase of more than 30%». At present, he adds, only the eight have also shown an increase in the number of deaths.

For Greece, Mr. Majorkinis points out that within the last week there has been an increase of diagnoses by 48% and an increase of patients with COVID-19 by 41%, however for now there is no increase in ICUsbut it is usually delayed by about 7 days in Omicron (due to shorter incubation).

According to him, the basic scenario for this oscillation predicts rapid increase in diagnoses for 1-2 weeks and then onea plate with a slow de-escalation that will last 1-2 months.

The assessment of the pressure on the health system, although it has great uncertainty, predicts that:

  • we will certainly see a small to moderate increase in the number of intubated and COVID-19 deaths,
  • the pressure on the health system is likely to be manageable without the need for additional horizontal measures.

Meanwhile, in a newer post, the professor emphasizes importance of testing.

As he states “as the pandemic progresses to more manageable levels testing will decrease, and in 1 year from now it makes sense to be much lower than today. Greece has pursued one of the most conservative policies and has maintained the second highest level of testing in Europe with a big difference from other countries. He has also performed a giant self-test program with the result that every house in Greece today knows how to follow the process easily and economically. In the period of oscillation we remember: to do a self-test if we have symptoms or have been exposed to a known case or have exposure to synchronicity».
