The organization supports the displaced populations of Ukraine after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
With the European Citizen Award 2022 honored medicine, humanitarian Non-Governmental Organization “Doctors of the World – Greece” (GTC – Greece) for their response to the humanitarian crisis that followed the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Since the beginning of the hostilities, the GCC has supported the displaced populations of Ukraine fleeing their country, and so far the organization has delivered more than 70 tons of humanitarian aid. The organization remains at the Romanian border with a mobile health unit, providing first aid and basic health services and information to refugees and those fleeing war zones. In Greece, GTCs provide psychosocial support, material assistance and information to refugees arriving in our country, while through the Open Polyclinics they cover the health care needs of children, women and the elderly.
The candidacy of the Doctors of the World of Greece was proposed by the Vice President of the European Parliament, Dimitris Papadimoulis.
European Citizen Award
The “European Citizen Award” has been instituted by the European Parliament and is a recognition of initiatives by individuals or organizations that encourage mutual understanding and closer convergence between people in the EU, cross-border cooperation that builds a stronger European spirit and / or European values. and fundamental rights.
Individuals, groups, associations or organizations can submit or nominate projects for the European Citizen Award. Proposals for projects can also be made by MEPs. This year 300 applications were submitted from which 30 winners were selected. Find the rules of participation here.
Doctors of the World – Greece
GTK – Greece, was founded in 1990 and is a medical, humanitarian NGO, member of the International Network of Doctors of the World.
The motivating principle of the organization is that every human being has the right to humanitarian aid, regardless of gender, origin, sexual orientation, religion, ideology or political belief. Consequently, Doctors of the World act on the principles of neutrality and impartiality. However, the fact that they maintain their neutrality does not prevent them from speaking openly about the violation of human rights when they themselves become eyewitnesses. Where possible, Doctors of the World points to the dangers of such encroachments, either through tacit diplomacy or through our intervention in the media.
