The maintenance works of Kifissos are already in progress, while the project is expected to be completed within 20 months.
Seven interventions has been launched by the Attica Region to strengthen road safety in Kifissos Avenue, one of the most central roads of the basin. The maintenance works of Kifissos are already in progress, while the project is expected to be completed within 20 months.
“With concrete steps we invest in road safety and in the solution of daily traffic problems in one of the most central highways of Attica”, stressed o Attica Regional Governor George Patoulis.
The axes are as follows:
Axis 1: Roadway
The works for the improvement of the road started from the junction of Kifissos with the Attiki Odos in the stream to Piraeus, while at the same time the maintenance works of the joints of the bridges of Kifissos are in progress. In this context, extensive maintenance work has been planned on the highway road. The work will be carried out in such a way as to cause the least possible traffic nuisance. It should be noted that Kifissos Avenue has the largest number of crossings of any other highway and therefore requires special planning. The design is formed in collaboration with the traffic department of Attica and according to the traffic conditions.
Axis 2: Impact arresting systems
The restoration works of the crashed-damaged safety railings are in progress and at the same time a study is being prepared for the replacement of the old railings with new interceptor systems of S.A.O. vehicles. At the same time, the position in which the SAEP impact collision restraint systems have been installed is being re-examined. and crashed – damaged systems are repaired.
Axis 3: Marking
Conventional technology electronic variable message boards have been replaced with new full matrix full technology boards to ensure that drivers are immediately informed about traffic and work issues. In addition, work is underway to replace worn road signs and maintain bridge bridges, as well as study to adjust the markings to improve traffic conditions and road safety. In addition, the cleaning works of the sound barriers (sound curtains) are in progress. The section from the Municipality of Renti to the end of the highway to Piraeus has already been completed.
Axis 4: Improved lighting
In July, the replacement of the old sodium luminaires with new low-consumption luminaires and increased Led efficiency will begin. The new luminaires will significantly improve road safety at night. At the same time, the works of upgrading the lighting of the bridges are in progress, through an architectural study of lighting, with the aim of landscaping the public spaces that are formed under the technical part of the bridge and keeping them in good condition. The new lighting of the bridges will act as a deterrent to infringing behaviors that have been identified in these areas.
Axis 5: Increase traffic capacity
In collaboration with the Association of Greek Transport Specialists, the required technical interventions and widening of problem areas will be made, which cause narrowing and impede the smooth flow of traffic.
Axis 6: Upgrading the traffic management center
The Traffic Management Center of the Attica Region is in 24-hour business operation. The executives, in good cooperation with the Hellenic Police and the road safety vehicles of the Attica Region, contribute effectively to the management of the incidents, to the timely information of the drivers and to the coordination of the works. The plan includes the modernization and upgrading of technical equipment as well as the expansion of the network of cameras and the installation of technical means for recording traffic violations (eg emergency lane violation, speed limit, etc.).
Axis 7: Improving road safety
Technical interventions will be made to improve road safety in places that have recorded road accidents in accordance with the prioritization of hazards, as shown by the road accident reports of the Greek Police. The relevant interventions are always implemented in collaboration with the Association of Greek Transport Specialists.
