The intervention of the Deputy Minister of Environment, George Amyras, was provoked by the killing of the chimpanzee yesterday morning in order to clarify the conditions under which
In particular, Mr. George Amyras sent a letter to the Attica Zoological Park and its Founder Mr. Jean Jacques Lesouer requesting full and immediate information:
- for the origin of the specific animals.
- for the interaction with each other, their function as a team and the adequacy of space.
- on how to ensure the escape of animals in the visitors’ area
- to ensure the safety of visitors in extreme cases of escape.
- for the necessity of implementing the protocol that led to the final killing of the animal.
The Undersecretary sent a letter to the Attica Region and its Veterinary Services, which according to the legislation are responsible for issuing a license for the establishment and operation of Zoos and the renewal or revocation of their operating license, requesting the immediate implementation of the required controls:
- for the conditions that caused the incident of escape and killing of the animal.
- for the way to ensure the safety of visitors in the park area in case of extreme escape.
- for the necessity of application in this case of the protocol that led to the final killing of the animal.
Finally, Mr. Amyras instructed the competent services of RIS for the immediate dispatch of a team of experts to the Attica Zoological Park, to determine the living conditions of the host wildlife.
