The PPC facilities in Nestos hosted the individual time trial of this year’s Panhellenic Men’s and Women’s Road Cycling Championship (24-25.06.2022).
The company welcomed at Nestos Complex the best athletes from all over Greece, to take part in the institution of the Hellenic Cycling Federation, which this year took place under the auspices of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace with great success.
The individual time trial was held first on Friday, June 24, with the athletes declaring their impressions of the route and giving their best, offering unique images. Pericles Elias was the big winner in the men’s category while the champion in the women’s category was Argyro Milaki.
As stated by Mr. Fotis Fotou, Director of the Nestos PPC Group: “This year we had the pleasure to open for the first time our facilities for the Cycling Championship, on a safe, green route, on the banks of the Nestos.
A water paradise that, as it is called, is reminiscent of a fjord. We congratulate the Champions for their fight, but also all the athletes for the excellent effort. Note that PPC has been connected to the bicycle since 1936, with employees using it as a means of transportation for counting. Today, the bicycle is for us an indisputable energy for the environment and our own life “.
PPC, in the context of its energy transition strategy, supports any action that promotes sustainable mobility and cycling. This year the company gave “energy” to the International Cycling Tour of Greece, while supporting the participation of the National Cycling Team in the event.
The company also gave a potential “present” to the Athens Cycling Tour while traveling to 7 cities with the PPC e-bike Festival, the first major festival exclusively for electric bicycles in Greece. He recently created the PPC Cycling Team, the company’s team of employees, with the aim of promoting cycling culture and sustainability to the domestic public.
The Nestos Complex is one of the four (4) main Hydroelectric Complexes of PPC and includes two (2) of the sixteen (16) total hydroelectric stations of the company, the Thesaurus HPP and the Platanovrisi HPP, with a total installed capacity of 500 MW.
The Thesaurus Dam is one of the largest dams in Europe and the largest cobblestone dam in the Balkans, while the Platanovrisi Dam is the first rolled concrete dam.
In addition to generating electricity, PPC, through the units, offers flood protection in the area and helps irrigate about 200,000 acres.
