Dangerous meteorological conditions for fires at the weekend

by

What the hazard maps show – What are the areas in the “red”

Potentially hazardous pyrometeorological conditions are expected to prevail in the eastern mainland (including Attica) and the Aegean over the weekend, according to the latest available forecast data. National Observatory of Athens (EAA) /meteo.gr.

The reason is the maintenance of high temperatures, combined with the low relative humidity and the significant strengthening of the winds, conditions that are expected to lead to a peak of the danger for the occurrence and spread of forest fires on Sunday, July 3rd. As it results from the examination of the available forecast data, indicative for Eastern Attica:

* The moisture content of the dead forest fuel will drop to levels below 10% (approximately 7-8%) during the noon / afternoon hours, remaining at relatively low levels (10-12%) during the night. Therefore, the conditions will be favorable for the ignition and the rapid spread of the fire (very high flammability), while the night “window” of fire control will be limited in time.

* The Hot-Dry-Windy pyrometeorological index (Temperature-Humidity-Wind) is expected to be found at extremely high values, which indicates the prevalence of pyrometeorological conditions that will be extremely favorable for the rapid spread of fire, making it very difficult to control fires that occur.

Regarding the areas that are expected to be in the very high risk zone during the weekend of July 2-3, these include Attica, K. and N. Evia, parts of Boeotia, Corinth, Argolida, Laconia, the Cyclades, Chios, Lesvos, Lemnos, Samothrace, Eastern Samos and N. Crete.

Areas at risk

The FLAME * meteorological unit of EAA / meteo.gr will continue to monitor the forecast and actual data, updating and specifying the estimates for the areas where the worst adverse meteorological conditions are expected. The hazard maps, which are based on the Canadian System of Pyrometeorological Indicators properly adapted to the fire environment of Greece, are also available daily through the home page of meteo.gr.
