He claims he was under the influence of narcotic pills the 22-year-old Algerian who yesterday dived into the sea while handcuffed, in Nea Paralia, Thessaloniki, to avoid arrest.
In a statement by GRTimes the defendant apologized to the police officers and to those he harmed by his actions.
The Automatic Three-member Misdemeanor Court adjourned the hearing of the case, due to the absence of witnesses, until next week. At the same time, he lifted his detention and thus he was released.
The 22-year-old, who has been in Greece for 5 years and claims to work as a barber, is accused of three misdemeanors.
Criminal proceedings were brought against him for resistance, disobedience and insult.
The young man, who was flagged for various crimes, tried to escape arrest when the police handcuffed him and tried to put him in the patrol car.
He began to run towards the sea, then dived into the water and continued to behave aggressively. The police entered the sea to save him.
