He felt dizzy, palpitations and intense itching where the bite marks are.
A woman fell victim to purple jellyfish last Sunday on the beach of Golden Coast Chania, Crete. As described in zarpanewshad visited the beach with her partner, when while she was in the sea, she felt a sting on her hand.
“There was a lot of waves in the sea and you couldn’t clearly see what was happening below. I was taking a bath and felt a strong sting”, he reports, while as he notes, at first he didn’t pay attention and thought that the bite might have come from a fish.
Afterwards, Haniotissa continued her bath in the sea, when she felt a second sting on her other hand. “I felt a second sting, quite strong. I was drawn. At first I had no signs”
As the woman describes, when she started seeing marks on her hands, she searched on Google to see what they could be, in fact, as she notes, “I looked for jellyfish stings for fun. They were exactly the same as what I had”
Immediately after, as she says, she went home, but when she saw that the signs were getting worse, she decided to visit a pharmacy to receive medication.
At the pharmacy, they calmed her down and gave her a cream, while she also describes the symptoms she has.
As he says, he has presented dizziness, palpitation and intense itching to the point. At the same time, he also feels pain where the marks are located, but only when touched.
She herself wanted to share her experience, so that the people of Chania would know about it and be especially careful.
It is recalled that in recent days, purple jellyfish have appeared on the beaches of Chania, due to the winds blowing in the area, which carried them further south.
How to deal with a possible jellyfish sting
To deal with the sting, bathers should follow the following steps:
- We remove any tentacles that are left on the spot. “We can use a sharp stone, a straw, a paper towel or anything but bare hands. The reason we don’t pour seawater first after leaving the sea is related to the fact that there may be a tentacle, which may leave the spot, go further down and sting us again,” he emphasizes. Items that can be used include an old plastic card or calling card, as well as a pair of tweezers.
- We check if the purple jellyfish has stung us elsewhere. The dermatologist – venereologist adds that there are cases when a bather is in a lot of pain in one spot, as a result of which he has not realized that there is a second bite. “We have to look for tentacles not only in the area that hurts, but in general to see if there is something small in some other part of our body. We will know this as there will be a strong redness. Pouring plenty of seawater helps a lot, but by the time we get it and pour it the bather who has been stung by the purple jellyfish will be in pain. It’s faster to remove the tentacle” explains the dermatologist – venereologist.
- Pour plenty of sea water. Using a container, a glass, a bucket or something similar, pour onto the spot where you received the sting from the purple jellyfish. Caution! We don’t use our hands. We repeat the process a few times.
- We use baking soda along with sea water to treat the pain caused by the sting. “The ratio is 1:1. The sting of the purple jellyfish is acidic. By choosing an alkaline element, we create a base. It has been observed to relieve acute pain,” he says. In the context of good preparation, it would be good for bathers to have a small bottle with them, in which there will be baking soda up to the middle. In this way, all that is needed is to add the sea water and after shaking well, we pour the contents into the place where the sting was made by the purple jellyfish.
- Cortisone cream, strength 3 or 4 | cortisone mousse. “After cleaning the area of tentacles, pouring seawater and applying the baking soda mixture, apply a thick layer of cortisone cream (strength 3 or 4) or cortisone mousse. We have obtained the two preparations from our pharmacist and have them with us as part of proper prevention and preparation. Cortisone that is in the form of an ointment is not indicated,” he notes.
- Antihistamine pill. “After taking the above steps, we take an antihistamine pill as a precaution. When we ask our pharmacist, we must make it clear to him that we want him to give us an antihistamine pill that does not make us drowsy,” he clarifies.
- Cortisone injection or cortisone pill (precautionary).
