People were running in panic to get away from the scene
Two members of the Philadelphia Police Department were injured on an iconic downtown avenue, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, where thousands of people had gathered to celebrate the anniversary of America’s independence by watching concerts and fireworks, local authorities said.
“We have a security incident on Benjamin Franklin Parkway,” emergency services said.
Both police officers are in stable condition, according to CBS3 Philadelphia, part of the CBS network. Law enforcement agencies said they are looking for the suspect.
Videos broadcast by local media showed people running to get away, while authorities urged those near the scene of the “incident” to take cover where they were.
“I didn’t hear the shots, but the police were telling us ‘Run, run, run!’» an eyewitness told a television station, part of the NBC network.
