Ms. Konstantina Zouni, undergraduate student of the Department of Administrative Science and Technology (DET), Athens University of Economics and Business, was honored with the distinction of “Open Library Fellow” for her contribution and excellent work ethic to the Open Library project of international scope. (OPA).

The play Open Library developed by the nonprofit Internet Archive, the digital library that provides 35 million books and archives 682 billion web pages. Its aim is to publish books from all over the world, in order to make them available to the general public, while respecting the authors’ copyright.

The student Konstantina Zouni contributed to the Open Library open source software project, as part of the course “Software Technology in Action” taught by the Professor Diomedes Spinellicontributing to the further development of the popular platform trusted by millions of readers worldwide.

The goal of the course “Software Technology in Practice” is to equip students to understand, analyze and collaborate, contributing to realistic software development projects, learning practices and tools used by the largest and most successful organizations on the planet. The innovation of the course also lies in the use of Free Software / Open Source Software (EL/LAK) in the examples in the exercises and in the assignments of the course.

Distinguished student Konstantina Zouni describes the value of the course and her participation in the project in terms of gaining knowledge and experience: “In the spring semester of 2022, I chose the “Software Technologies and Data Analytics” major where we delve into software concepts and big data management. Through Mr. Spinelli’s “Software Technology in Practice” course, I was given the opportunity to work on an open source project. The term open source refers to projects based on the principles of open exchange and collaboration that people can modify and use freely because their code is publicly accessible. As part of the coursework, we students were asked to choose a project we are interested in and contribute to by writing code during the semester. After some searching, I found Open Library, a project of the Internet Archive that offers a publicly accessible catalog of books that aims to include every book in the world. During my time working with the project team, I attended their weekly online meetings and actively participated in discussions on various project issues. Also, every week I worked on small or bigger problems (GitHub issues) which the team members then evaluated. The problems I solved were mainly related to improving the user experience while browsing the website as well as creating a social card with which users can share their book lists on social networks. The experience I gained was very important as I learned to collaborate and write code in the context of a large project, use new tools like docker, and strengthened my knowledge in python, CSS, JavaScript».

It is worth noting that this year a total of 41 students of the course “Software Technology in Action” contributed code to 29 different software projects.
