Disciplinary investigation into televised “windows” and “teletrials” involving lawyers

by

Disciplinary proceedings are not individualized, but the designated rapporteur will individualize which articles of the Lawyers Code have been breached on a case-by-case basis by the disciplinary lawyers

By Athens Bar Association nationwide disciplinary proceedings were launched against the lawyers who participate in the “windows” of the television channels and conduct “teletrials” on pending cases that are of great concern to the citizens.

Already, the Plenary of the presidents of the Bar Associations of Greece has expressed “its explicit and categorical opposition to any unethical behavior” lawyers who appear in the television “windows”.

More specifically, the head of the Disciplinary Councils of the Athens Bar Association Zisis Konstantinou, took charge of the matter ex officio and brought nationwide disciplinary proceedings against all those responsible (in rem), who in the last two years have appeared on television “windows” and broadcasts on pending cases. It is estimated that the auditees will be around 20 lawyers.

Disciplinary proceedings are not personalized, but the competent rapporteur to be appointed will individualize which articles of the Lawyers’ Code have been violated on a case-by-case basis by the disciplined lawyers.

In fact, Mr. Konstantinou asked all the television stations, across Greece, to send him video tapes of news bulletins and television shows in which lawyers participate.
