The European Court ruled, among other things, that twelve of the applicants who were on the boat, suffered “humiliating treatment” during the body search that was carried out on them after they disembarked in Farmakonisi
Violations of articles of the European Convention on Human Rights on the part of Greece, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) found in the decision it issued today regarding the shipwreck in Farmakonisi. During the wreck, which occurred on January 20, 2014, eleven refugees lost their lives.
The European Court of Human Rights ruled, among other things, that the Greek authorities “did not conduct a thorough and effective investigation to shed light on the circumstances under which the boat sank” and that they did not “do what one would reasonably expect to provide the applicants and their relatives with the protection they needed.”
It also ruled that twelve of the applicants who were on the boat suffered “humiliating treatment” during the body search that was carried out on them after they disembarked in Farmakonisi.
Greece is ordered to pay a total compensation of 330,000 euros to the 16 applicants.
