The “bakery meal” they created contains cheesecakes, underbaked cookies, puffs and pastries that are close to or have reached their expiration date.
An original “bakery meal(bakery meal) created by scientists from the Institute of Bio-economy and Agro-technology SIXTY and the Veterinary Research Institute of ELGO Dimitra to solve the problem of the high cost of animal feed. After searching and identifying possible sources of food by-products, they secured the supply of various items from bakeries, patisseries and supermarkets and then studied the most suitable composition for a ration, suitable for the pigs of the pig farmers in the area.
The “bakery meal” they created contains cheesecakes, underbaked cookies, puffs and pastries that are close to or have reached their expiration date.
These foods are unpacked, crushed, heat treated and pasteurized to remove potential germs and preserve their nutrients. They are then mixed with the pigs’ existing ration, in the correct proportions that have been determined, and the resulting feed feeds the livestock unit.
The scientific manager of the CPigFeed project for the “sustainable integration of food by-products in the nutrition of pigs in the context of the circular economy”, researcher at EKETA, Giorgios Banias, points out to APE – MPE that the project, funded by the program “Research, Create, Innovate » of the Ministry of Development and the General Secretariat of Research and Innovation, is still in an experimental stage as it will be completed in one year. However, according to the available data, the use of this particular meal has reduced the cost of feeding pigs by 40% and pig farmers are also delighted as the quality of the meat is excellent. At the same time, there are also environmental benefits from the whole process, since less food ends up in landfills, the circular bioeconomy is put into practice and in turn promotes industrial symbiosis in the agri-food sector. Through this, the waste of a food production company can be a raw material for another company.
The CPigFeed project was presented at the SinCE-AFC final conference
The CPigFeed project was presented today at the final conference of SinCE-AFC, the Interreg Europe program for the circular economy in the agri-food sector, together with several other good practices implemented in Europe.
The conference was organized by the lead partner of SinCE-AFC, the Development Company of OTA of Eastern Thessaloniki ‘Anatoliki AE’ and the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia on behalf of the Region of Central Macedonia, while the list of examples of circular economy applied in practice in Central Macedonia is completed by the straws made from wheat stalks, cooperative stores that implement the circular economy, a vertically integrated fruit and vegetable production unit that uses the residues of agricultural production for energy production, a biogas production company from the biomass of livestock waste, etc.
Forty good practices have been recorded by all SinCE-AFC partners
The Director of the Department of Planning and Sustainable Development of the Eastern SA, Vasiliki Papadopoulou, pointed out to APE – BPE that more than forty good practices have been recorded from all the regions, regions and municipalities participating in the project (from Greece, Italy, Ireland, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria). He announced, at the same time, that with the end of the first phase of the project, all partners developed their action plans that include tasks and objectives that will be attempted to be implemented in the second phase of the project, which will last another year, starting from August.
Especially for the Region of Central Macedonia, Ms. Papadopoulou pointed out that the creation of a support mechanism that will operate within the Region will be sought to support small and medium-sized businesses in the agri-food sector, so that they can incorporate circular economy practices into their operations. In this context, the necessary actions will be taken to finance the project from the new PEP.
