A mom. Hundreds of eggs. As if it were a ballet performance in the depths of the ocean. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, or MBARI, filmed a mother squid tending to her eggs off the coast of California.

The delicate, reddish squid is called Bathyteuthis sp. MBARI described the squid and its eggs as an “incredibly rare sight”. The Institute released the video in question, saying it came from a recent dive at a depth of 1,390 meters.

The nonprofit Monterey Bay Aquarium has been in operation since 1984 and its collection includes over 35,000 aquatic organisms from 550 species, including penguins, jellyfish and sharks. With the main objective of protecting the oceans, in addition to periodic exhibitions, it implements scientific programs and public awareness campaigns. Its Research Institute, founded in 1987, has five vessels and three autonomous submarines specially equipped to study marine life, as well as a permanent underwater “laboratory” 4,000 meters below the sea’s surface.

Mom takes special care of her future… squids. According to MBARI, most squid deposit their egg cases on the sea floor or let them drift in the water. The researchers believe that carrying behavior could help the babies’ chances of survival. “This is only the second time we have found a hatchling Bathyteuthis sp. since the first observation 17 years ago!“, the researchers point out.

The deep ocean is challenging to study, and we only get brief glimpses into the behaviors of seabed animals. Each observation recorded by our ROVs completes another piece of the puzzle and helps improve our understanding of life on the seabed“, they note themselves.
