Zaharo: Doctors are optimistic about the 6-year-old girl who almost drowned

by

“It was a particularly difficult night, but we are optimistic,” the head of the Children’s ICU, Andreas Iliadis, told us.

The kiss of life given to her by her mother proved to be a lifesaver, as was the first aid she received from the lifeguard who was supervising the beach of Zaharos on Wednesday afternoon, for the 6-year-old girl who lost consciousness while swimming.

Yesterday, the first neurological check was done by the medical and nursing team of the Children’s ICU of the PGNP, where he has been intubated since Wednesday night, and the picture was very good.

“It was a particularly difficult night, but we are optimistic,” he told us head of the Children’s ICU, Andreas Iliadis. He added: “Yesterday we opened a neurological window to see how the little one’s neurological picture is and the first indications are good. He doesn’t seem to be developing cerebral edema and we don’t have any other neurological issues. Also, the little girl’s heart is rhythmic even though she suffered a cardiac arrest. Today we will do a second neurological check and if everything is good we will gradually try to wake her up”.

THE HAPPENING
We remind you that the little girl has come to Ilia, her parents’ place of origin, from Switzerland where she lives permanently with her parents and her sister. On Wednesday afternoon they had gone for a swim in Zaharo. While the little girl was enjoying the sea and the game at some point her mother realized that something had happened to her daughter. He rushed, pulled the child out of the sea and luckily for her he knew first aid and gave her the kiss of life. Fortunately, the beach also had a lifeguard who reached her in a few minutes and provided her with life-saving assistance until the EKAV arrived with specialized personnel. She was initially transferred to the Krestena health center and then to the Pyrgos hospital where the little girl suffered a miscarriage. The doctors managed to revive her and after intubating her, they transferred her to the ICU of the PGNP.

THE MARK
“On the occasion of this incident, I want to emphasize how crucial the knowledge of first aid is,” emphasizes Mr. Iliadis and explains:
“Initially, the intervention of the mother in the first minutes of the incident, and then of the lifeguard, was decisive. This means that the courses held in schools and other professional areas by us doctors, the EKAB, the EES must be more intensive. Beyond prevention, I believe that knowledge of first aid by the common people is essential. And of course, this effort was completed by the excellent handling provided by the health staff of the EKAV, the health center and the Pyrgos hospital. Together, I believe we will win this child’s life.”
