UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation on Thursday after a series of scandals made his position at the helm of the Conservative Party untenable.
The main recent crisis happened when the British press revealed several parties that took place at the country’s government headquarters, during the height of the lockdown in the United Kingdom. Boris has repeatedly denied that the parties ever took place or that he was aware of them — but was later harassed by photos and forced to apologise.
The prime minister also came under pressure after a close ally was accused of sexual harassment – the government recently admitted that the prime minister knew about the cases. On Wednesday (6), more than 50 members of the government resigned, and the remaining ministers formally asked Boris to step down.
In this Friday’s episode (8), Café da Manhã talks to Dawisson Belém Lopes, professor of international politics at UFMG and visiting researcher at the University of Oxford. He talks about the trajectory of Boris Johnson, the scandals that led to his resignation and what should happen in British politics going forward.
