Amazon has record deforestation for the month of June

by

Areas with deforestation alert in the Legal Amazon in June 2022 reached 1,120 km², according to data from Deter, a monitoring program run by Inpe (National Institute for Space Research). This is the highest figure for the month of June since 2016.

Before that, the record for the month of June had been in 2021, when 1,061 km² of forest was destroyed.

In 2022, the month of April was the only one to present an area of deforestation that exceeded 1,000 square kilometers – in total, there were 1,012.5 km². Now, June also shows this mark in the deforestation of the forest and appears as the month with the largest deforested area in 2022.

For comparison purposes, the city of São Paulo has about 1,521 km², according to Fundação Seade. The total deforested in the Amazon in June alone would be equivalent to cutting down more than 74% of the capital.

With the new Inpe update, around 3,971 km² of the Legal Amazon were destroyed in 2022 alone.

The area destroyed between the first and second quarter of the year more than tripled. In the first quarter of the year, an area of 940 km² was deforested. In the second quarter, deforestation reached 3,031 km².

Compared to previous years, it is from June onwards, when the dry season begins, that deforested areas tend to grow. Even so, the deforestation of more than 1,000 km² of the Amazon is considered atypical for any time of the year.
