The islands of the North Aegean (Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios, Ikaria and Samos) appear to be “free” of jellyfish, as well as Corinthia.

To Late Saronic the highest concentrations are found purple jellyfishaccording to the latter JellyReport which is based on the records entered into the iNaturalist platform. However, from there they expand to Argoliko and the Cyclades, the Ionian, the Southern Peloponnese, the North-West of Crete and the first leg of Halkidiki.

In smaller concentrations they also appear in other parts of Greece, while the islands of the North Aegean (Lemnos, Lesbos, Chios, Ikaria and Samos) are seen “free” of jellyfish, as well as Corinthia.

What to do if you get bitten

The sting of a purple jellyfish is painful and causes inflammation, a local swelling and a local increase in temperature. At the same time, it causes an explosion of histamine, which can be so intense that it will cause allergic shock. That is why we administer antihistamines to the overall swelling from the histamine explosion.

According to the experts, the first move we can make is to limit the inflammation by applying ice water or an ice pack or ice. Let the inflammation go down and then clean as much as we can in a lighter way. To get rid of the residue from the javelins – which we don’t see anyway – by doing a local cleaning, a local wash, and then putting something to neutralize the acid, which is nothing but baking soda. Two drops of baking soda in a spoon are enough to make something like a cream and this cream is put on the spot.

At the same time, the use of antihistamines is also recommended. From then on, if there are more severe symptoms (nausea, headaches, vomiting, etc.) we should contact a specialist.
