Thessaloniki: 59-year-old man hid the Holy Grail and Byzantine icons in his house

The Edessa Security made an investigation, during which it emerged that it was looking – through an online advertisement – for prospective buyers to sell some of the relics, the origin of which remains, for now, unknown.

Host ecclesiastical relicssuch as images, crosses, wood-carved parts of a holy temple and Holy Grailwhich are estimated to belong to the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period, were found in possession of a 59-year-oldwho was arrested in the east Thessaloniki.

It was preceded by an investigation by police officers of the Edessa Security, during which it emerged that he was looking – through an online advertisement – for prospective buyers to sell some of the heirlooms, the origin of which remains, for now, unknown.

According to an announcement by the Hellenic Republic of Greece, the following were found and confiscated in his apartment and in a warehouse:
  • church icons,
  • trap door,
  • crosses,
  • candlesticks,
  • candlesticks,
  • a holy grail,
  • metal trays and containers,
  • carved parts of a holy temple.

According to the first assessment of the archaeologists of the competent Ephorate of Antiquities, the confiscated objects fall within the protective provisions of the legislation on the protection of antiquities and will be sent for further examination and archaeological assessment.

A case file was filed against the 59-year-old, with which he is being referred to the competent prosecutor of Thessaloniki.
