Opinion – Copo Cheio: Refreshing, pilsen gets great Brazilian versions

by

You may not have realized it, but your first beer has a good chance of being Czech-inspired. The country is responsible for the traditional pilsen and its variations, the most consumed style in the world.

Despite being an easy-to-drink beer, its elaboration is much more complex than the hoppy india pale ale —just to cite an example of a darling style in Brazil. In IPAs, an extra dose of hops can enhance the aroma and mask imperfections. With pilsens, any mistake means starting over from the beginning.

The main style beer in the world is Pilsner Urquell, produced in Plzen (or Pilsen), in the Bohemia region, and with draft beer available in specialized bars, such as Empório Alto dos Pinheiros. But the good news is that several craft breweries have recently released good examples, inspired by the refreshing Czech style.

The main one is the Bohemian Lager from Cervejaria Tarantino (r. Miguel Nelson Bechara, 316, Limão, @cervejariatarantino). Made in direct line with the Consulate of the Czech Republic, it has a recipe developed by master brewer Tomás Kincl. At 4.5% alcohol, the beer is very refreshing and easy to drink, but it came out in a limited batch of 2,000 liters. So run.

Cervejaria Dádiva (cervejariadadiva.com.br/loja) brings Bohemian Pils, the most recent novelty in the Classic Styles line, known for its traditional formulas for classic styles, without any fuss. The beer arrives in a 310 ml can, with a suggested price of R$ 19.90.

There is also Wanderlust, pilsen from Santos, Everbrew, which takes a break from its IPAs, the house specialty. It is the most alcoholic of the group, with 5.5%. All are made with Czech hops. As well as Pilsner Urquell, Wanderlust is available in draft beer at EAP (r. Vupabussu, 305, Pinheiros, @eapsp).

But don’t worry, every craft beer bar has at least one fresh pilsen to offer customers.

For those who want a less conventional Czech, the tip is Tmavé Pivo, a light and dark dark lager from Cerveja Avós, with 5.2% alcohol and only 17 IBU (bitterness scale that reaches 120) — available in long neck on the brewery’s ecommerce, ceraavos.com/loja, for R$16.

To complete, the same EAP hosts this Saturday (16), at 2 pm, the Czech Beer Experience. The event features a lecture on Czech history and styles, with the Koala San Brew brewer, as well as a guided tasting with fresh draft beers. The beers will be served from a specific tap for traditional Czech lagers. Tickets for R$ 345, on Whatsapp (11) 99250-7997.
