On Monday, the meeting of the President of the Commission and the Commissioner for Energy with the President of Azerbaijan
The president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the energy commissioner, Country Simpsonwill travel to Azerbaijan to strengthen bilateral relations, including energy cooperation, the Commission announced today.
“On Monday 18 July, Commission President and Energy Commissioner Kadri Simpson will be in Azerbaijan to further strengthen the existing cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan. As Russia continues to use energy supplies as a weapon, diversifying our energy imports is a top priority for the EU. The Southern Gas Corridor can play a central role in supplying the EU with natural gas, especially for South-Eastern Europe.”says the Commission’s announcement.
It is also pointed out that the EU and Azerbaijan are working together to build a long-term partnership on clean energy and energy efficiency as both parties pursue their green transition and the goals of the Paris Agreement. The EU and Azerbaijan are negotiating a new comprehensive agreement, which will enable enhanced cooperation in a wide range of areas, including economic diversification, investment, trade and the full potential of civil society.
President von der Leyen and Commissioner Simpson will meet with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and then hold a joint press conference. Commissioner Simpson will participate in the EU-Azerbaijan Energy Dialogue with Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister, Parviz Shahbazov.
