Europe: Thousands of fires in Greece, France, Spain and Portugal

by

Fires are raging out of control in France, while in Portugal and Spain houses were burned in many areas. Temperatures reach up to 45 degrees Celsius.

The heat waves they have become more frequent, more intense and longer lasting due to human-induced climate change. The world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial age began and the temperatures will continue to rise unless governments around the world make sharp cuts in emissions.

Many countries of Europe are at the mercy of the heat and thousands of fires have erupted in recent days. The largest fires occurred in Greece, France, Spain and Portugal.

In GREECE, according to the fire risk prediction map, in the last few days 5 regions are in orange, of which Central Greece and Crete inspire great concern. Today, Friday 15/7, large fires broke out in southern Rethymnon, Anavyssos and Evia.

Specifically, in southern Rethymnon, approximately 200 acres of olive groves burned, while a settlement was also evacuated. Strong winds are making the titanic efforts of firefighters very difficult.

In Anavyssos, 92 firefighters with 5 groups of pedestrian units and 22 vehicles tried, while 4 aircraft and 3 helicopters make aerial drops. Fortunately, they managed to stop it before it spread to settlements.

In France hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes as the forest fires are raging uncontrollably in the southwest, as the authorities said today.

More than 1,000 firefighters supported by nine firefighting aircraft have been battling since Tuesday to bring under control two wildfires fanned by heat and strong winds.

“Conditions remain adverse”reported the authorities of the Gironde department, where the fire is raging.

The fires have so far charred a total of 73,000 acres, with 20,000 acres burned overnight, authorities said.

Another forest fire that broke out yesterday in the southeastern French town of Tarascon and burned 10,000 hectares was brought under control, according to firefighters.

One of the two fires in the Gironde is near the town of Landira south of Bordeaux, where 42,000 hectares have burned, roads have been closed and another 480 residents have been evacuated, bringing the total number to nearly 1,000.

The other fire, which has already burned 31,000 hectares, occurred along the Atlantic coast of France, near the “Pilla dune”, the highest sand dune in Europe, in the Arcachon Bay area, above which it towered into the sky black clouds of smoke.

About 6,000 people were evacuated on Wednesday from neighboring camps and another 4,000 early Thursday.

Three homes and two restaurants were destroyed overnight in the area, according to authorities.

Forest fires also occurred in Portugal and Spain burning houses and threatening properties as a large part of Europe is experiencing heatwaves with temperatures, in some areas, reaching 45 degrees Celsius.

Firefighters in Spain battled to protect the town of Monsagro as fires raged further south in Monfragüe National Park, home to rare bird species. The main N-5 route in Cáceres just east of the park was cut off when a forest fire reached the road.

In Portugal, more than 30 fires were active on Friday morning, including one in a forest in Pombal in the central Leiria region, which has been ongoing for a week. More than 300 square kilometers have burned this year, more than in all of 2021.

In fact, health officials in Portugal recorded 238 deaths, more than normal, since July 7, which they attributed to very hot and dry conditions. The elderly, children and people with chronic diseases are more affected.
