The prosecutor’s office characterizes the way of action of the perpetrators as methodical and coordinated
“Everyone agreed to go organized and armed to the area of Harilaou […] and strike together with weapons, punches and kicks whoever they find in the vicinity, seeking to take the lives of people with the sole criterion of choosing the victims that they support a certain group,” reads the multi-page prosecutor’s motion, which requests that they be brought to trial before Mixed Jury Court of the Appellate District of Thessaloniki, the 12 defendants for the blind fan hit that claimed the life of 19-year-old Alkis Kampanos.
In its proposal number 1544/22, which it has 86 pages and was submitted to the Criminal Court of Thessalonikiwhich will decide whether it will be accepted or not, the District Attorney describes in detail the timeline of the murderous attack against the unfortunate 19-year-old and his group, in the early hours of February 1, 2022, in Charilaou Thessaloniki, evaluating and valuing the participation of each of the 12 involved – and temporarily detained – persons.
As it became known, the prosecutor’s office characterizes their method of action as “methodical and coordinated”, pointing out the “speed” with which they attacked their victims and completed their “heinous crime” – within a minute, while she speaks of ” coldly and without qualms and merciless blows’ with various weapons and on various parts of the body. Commenting, the causes of the attack lie in the sports background and fan rivalry, stating that there had been no previous reason on the part of the victims, with the perpetrators – as described – facing the situation in which the victims had fallen to “be proud” later for their exploits, with references such as “we got them”.
Basing the rationale of her proposal on the evidentiary material gathered both in the main investigation and in the previous preliminary police investigation, and which includes – among other things – testimonies, video material from the area, results of laboratory tests through taking biological material, forensic findings, etc. a., the deputy prosecutor of the first courts proposes that the defendants be referred for the following acts:
- Defendants for manslaughter, committed (in the case of Alkis) and attempted (in the case of the first injured youth), jointly,
- one of them for attempted homicide in the case of the second injured young man, and the remaining 11 as simple accomplices in the specific act,
- all for assault and possession of objects that can cause bodily harm, with the aggravating provisions of the Sports Law, as well as for illegal carrying and use of weapons.
With the same proposal, it is requested that their temporary detention be continued after the end of the 6 months, which is completed in August.
The chronicle of the murderous attack
Unraveling the “bundle” of events, the prosecutor’s proposal begins on the evening of January 31, at a fan club in the center of Thessaloniki, where most of the accused were and gradually began to arrive. As stated in the proposal, earlier in the Oreokastro area of Thessaloniki there had been a fan incident at the expense of “like-minded” people gathered in the association. When this became known, it was proposed by three to carry out an organized attack and for this reason, phone calls followed and – among them – to an unknown person who was called to go to Harilaou, from where he informed them that there are some, few, people scattered in the area.
After it was decided to go to the point “for the agreed attack”, the 12 accused got into three cars (the exact position of each one inside the vehicles is described), with their departure taking place between 11:30 and 11:50 pm. According to what is mentioned in the prosecution proposal, all of them carried weapons, such as knives, crowbars, metal pipes, gloves, a scythe and a karambit-type knife, they had covered their features with masks, neckerchiefs, hoods, caps and helmets, while some left their mobile phones on the link so they could not be traced and some others switched them off en route.
“What team are you?”
Seventeen minutes after midnight on February 1, the perpetrators find 19-year-old Alkis and four other people, who at that time were on the steps of an apartment building at 18 Th. Gazi Street, where they were talking. Having stopped their vehicles in the middle of the road, some approached the unsuspecting victims, asking them: “what group are you?” When they answered – and without any verbal confrontation – the defendants, according to the prosecutor’s proposal, having got out of the vehicles one after the other, began to attack them suddenly, violently beating them with the weapons they were carrying them, with punches and kicks.
The five young followers tried to run to escape and only two of them succeeded. A third, attempting to escape, which he eventually succeeded in, was struck with a sickle, which caused him a deep laceration and bleeding. According to the prosecutor, Alkis and another young man did not escape the fury of the perpetrators, who were continuously beaten for more than a minute.
“Don’t bother me anymore, help, I can’t, I’m in pain”
“Alkis was initially standing on the steps of the apartment building and from the blows, from the sticks, crowbars, globes and fists, he fell to the pavement next to the steps… At this point, the defendants managed to hit him repeatedly and severely with the knives and the sickle, which caused him to bleed profusely, as well as with kicks,” the prosecutor’s motion states, with the unfortunate 19-year-old pleading with them to stop, shouting: “Don’t bother me anymore” and “Help, I can’t, I’m in pain ». The perpetrators only stopped when they noticed eight people approaching them, carrying items, at which point they returned to their cars and disappeared, returning either to the link above or to their homes.
The death of Alkis Kampanos occurred at 12.20 after midnight, and, according to the forensic findings, was attributed to the combination of fatal injuries to the lower limbs (he was bleeding uncontrollably from the leg) and head injuries. The injured young man, who tried to help the 19-year-old, suffered 12 wounds (seven to the legs, one to the chest and four to the head), while his death was prevented due to his firmness and timely transport to hospital, where he underwent surgery operation, as described in the proposal.
The motion makes special mention of the defendant who was arrested in time first, noting that his participation in the murderous attack lasted 11 seconds, after he returned to the vehicle he was driving to stop it after realizing that he had not. However, it does not diminish his participation, as stated, and it is recommended that he be indicted for both the murder and the other acts.
What did the defendants claim?
The accused were arrested in the next 24 hours and at the scene of the attack – among other things – the folding sickle was found, while the karambit was found thrown near the Cemeteries of Thermi. The perpetrators, during their lengthy apologies, claimed that they had no homicidal intent, but only the intent of verbal disapproval because the episode in Oreokastro had preceded, claims that, according to the public prosecutor, “do not stand up to logic” and with detailed reasoning and documentation rejects one by one.
“Let the trial take place in Athens”
In the meantime, in a statement, the lawyer of the family of Alkis, Alexis Kougias, said that he will submit a request both to the prosecutor of the Supreme Court and to the heads of the Prosecutors’ Offices of First Instance and Appeals of Thessaloniki for the trial to be held in Athens, “for security reasons the prosecution witnesses, the parents of Alkis, but also the jurors – members of the Court, due to the criminal personality of the perpetrators and their criminal environment”.
