The fire brigade are fighting the flames in the great fire in Megara in agroforestry area in Veniza Megaron underway amid strong winds.

A message via 112 was sent a while ago to the residents of the Papagianneika Megaron settlement for a precautionary evacuation from the area, while the Zachouli settlement was evacuated earlier.

Specifically, the message states: “If you are in the settlement of Papagianneika Megara, evacuate now to Megara. Forest fire in your area. Follow the instructions of the Authorities. Self-protection instructions: https://bit.ly/32VyYzm.

“We have reports of damage to the houses in the Zahouli settlement,” he said in SKAI, the Deputy Regional Governor of Western Attica, Lefteris Kosmopoulos.

He added that so far there are no reports of trapped people, while he emphasized that the fire is very difficult as the wind makes extinguishing difficult. At the same time, he pointed out that the whole area is virgin forest.

“It’s not going well,” the Fire Department officers emphasize regarding the progress of the fire due to the difficulty in extinguishing it.

According to the same sources, the goal is not to reach fire in Alepochori.

According to the Fire Department, the fire broke out shortly before 2 in the afternoon while northerly winds of 4-7 Beaufort were blowing at the site.

The forces of the Fire Department are constantly being strengthened as at this time 95 firefighters with 3 groups of pedestrians, 34 vehicles, 7 aircraft and 7 helicopters, one of which is for aerial coordination, are operating, while volunteer firefighters and local water bodies provide assistance.

In addition, they have been made available by various services of G.A.D.A. 49 police officers with 25 vehicles who support the work of the fire brigade.

Traffic regulations in the area due to fire
