A Japanese fisherman has admitted to stabbing sea turtles to death after holidaymakers stumbled upon the gruesome scene, the Mirror reports.
Over 30 greens sea turtles were found dead or dying with knives to their throats on a beach on the remote island of Kumejima last Thursday. Officials expressed dismay at the incident and said they had found the attacker, but did not name the person.
The perpetrator told the local fishermen’s cooperative that the turtles were caught in his nets and he became frustrated trying to disentangle them. He said he freed many turtles, but after fighting for a long time he started stabbing them to weaken them!
THE Yoshimitsu Tsukakoshia senior official of the local sea turtle conservation organization, told the Japanese newspaper ‘The Mainichi’ that it was a “extremely gruesome scene».
Mr. Tsukakoshi was enraged by the fisherman’s outburst, saying that turtles are such gentle creatures and that he could not believe what had happened. The head of the cooperative explained the situation and claimed that the fisherman had never seen so many turtles in his nets, but now regretted his actions.
Green sea turtles are listed as endangered species by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and on the “red list” of threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
