Fires: Even worse forecasts – What is the weather hot-dry windy

by

Fire weather conditions worsen on Thursday and Friday due to strengthening northerly winds combined with very hot and dry conditions

Based on the latest available forecast data analyzed by the FLAME pyrometeorological team of the National Observatory of Athens (EAA) / meteo.gr, a significant deterioration is expected in the already aggravated fire-meteorological conditions in our country during the two-day period Thursday – Friday, 28 – 29.07.2022.

The cause of this significant deterioration is the expected strengthening of the northerly winds in the Aegean and eastern mainland Greece, in combination with the very hot and dry conditions prevailing in our country during the last days, and which have significantly increased the flammability of forest fuels.

Overall, the fire-meteorological conditions on Thursday 28.07.2022 and Friday 29.07.2022 are expected to be characterized by the particularly dangerous, for the occurrence and spread of forest fires, Hot – Dry – Windy type of weather.

In particular, on Thursday 28.07.2022:

A very high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Attica, Boeotia, N and S Evia, Corinth, Argolis and Laconia.

A high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Evros (including the Dadia area), and locally in Rhodope, Fthiotida, Phocis, Ilia, Messinia, Samothraki, Limnos, Lesvos, Chios and Samos.

A high potential for wind-driven forest fires is expected in the northernmost islands of the Cyclades.

For Friday 29.07.2022:

The very high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads remains in Attica, Boeotia, N and S Evia, Corinth, Argolis and Laconia.

The high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads remains in Evros (including the area of Dadia), Chios, and locally in Rhodopi, Fthiotida, Fokida, Ilia, Messinia, Achaia, Lesbos, and Samos.

The high potential for wind-driven forest fires remains in the Cyclades, Kasos, Karpathos and S. Crete.

It is pointed out that in the above geographical zones, special attention should be paid to areas where northerly winds will “align” with the topography and forest fuel (eg, when the wind blows perpendicular to the slope of a densely vegetated mountain mass), maximizing the potential for extreme fire behavior.

Finally, the forecast data currently available indicate a continuation of adverse fire-meteorological conditions on the weekend of 30-31.07.2022 in eastern and southern Greece, including Attica, Evia and parts of the Peloponnese and the Aegean islands.
