Thesprotia: Archaeocapiles built a Roman mausoleum in Ancient Photiki

Roman mausoleum which was recently revealed in Ancient Photography and had not yet been investigated in its entirety, unknown persons were involved, reports the epiruspost.gr.

Archaeological research is being conducted at Ancient Photiki by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thesprotia and the Finnish Institute.

In the context of this research, a Roman Mausoleum came to light, with the first estimate speaking of a very important archaeological discovery.

The archaeological research was in progress, however, some unknown people acted in the area. It is estimated that the antiquarians entered between it July 23rd and 25th.

Using machinery, they excavated, broke the heavy slab in a tomb previously undiscovered by archaeologists and removed its – whatever – contents.

In fact, they roughly re-covered the tomb while causing damage to the entire monument.

This action was reported to the Police who are conducting an investigation in the wider area.

THE Ancient Photography it is assumed that it was in the present area of ​​Agios Donatos (Sametia) because the sarcophagus of the King of Epirus Pyrrhus (318-272 BC) was found there, which today is in the Ioannina museum. Over time it declined and thus was occupied by the Romans, who turned it into their own colony.

The reason for its creation was Roman colonization. Because of this, other colonies like that of Nicopolis were created. This resulted in the strengthening of the province of Thesprotia as a transfer of population from neighboring areas to the newly established cities was observed.

Latin inscriptions and other ancient findings were found in the area, testifying to a history of cultural flourishing. Today all the finds are exhibited in the museums of Epirus as well as abroad.
