WWF Director: Living and unburnt important core of Dadia Park

Titania was the effort of the firefighting forces to save the “kingdom” of predators in Dadia of Evros.

The concerted efforts of all involved agencies stopped the fire’s progress towards the strictly protected zone of the National Park, thus preventing the destruction of the habitats of many important species that live in the area.

Encouraging for the conservation of the black vulture colony in Dadia is the data carried by the digital transmitters fitted to them, as most have returned to the nests to care for their young.

The director of WWF Greece also gives an optimistic picture with his post, Dimitris Karavellaswho notes that a significant part of the core of the Dadia National Park is still alive and unburnt.

“In the sky if you pay attention, a black vulture is flying, while another is sitting on the rock. Hope and optimism in the black and heartbreak. Nature resists” concludes his post.

The encouraging picture for the future was the result of the tireless and continuous work of firefighters, volunteers, loggers and forest workers who from the first moment fell into the battle to save the precious treasure of biodiversity of the protected forest of Dadia.

Extinction has also helped many of the black vultures, one of the region’s most important species, return to their nests in the core of the National Park. The signal from the transmitters placed on the birds led to this finding.

“Some of these birds that are reproductively mature and had nests in the unburnt core piece, didn’t leave them. They continued to go to the nests to take care of the chicks,” says Sylvia Zakkak, a biologist at the Evros and Dadia Delta National Park Management Unit.

A wildlife first aid station has already been installed in the area by “ANIMA”, “ARION”, the AUTH Veterinary School, “Action for Wildlife” and volunteer veterinarians. As soon as the Fire Service allows it, teams of volunteers and veterinarians will sweep the forest to help any injured animals.
